A spiritual genogram can lead to greater clarity and focus on the therapeutic work and can help the social worker reflect on what spiritually based interventions may be appropriate and useful. It can also paint a picture of trends, and help show the client what has impacted their spirituality. A spiritual genogram creates a visual picture of the positive and possibly negative spiritual influences a client has had. I think spiritual genograms can be a very powerful tool to use with clients. Spiritual genograms are a way for the client to visualize their spirituality while allowing the therapist to learn how family members, books, events, conflicts, and experiences have contributed to the client’s spiritual outlook (Bullis, 1996). Spiritual genograms can include important books, experiences, lectures, and events that have shaped the client’s spiritual position and outlook (Bullis, 1996). Hannah has worked in child protection roles as a registered social worker and is also a systemic practitioner. Clients can also complete the genogram with their family members to discuss their family’s spiritual history and possible spiritual issues (Cunnigham, 2012). The spiritual genogram is not limited to immediate family members and can include anyone who has been a part of the client’s spirituality. Spiritual genograms are a diagram of the client’s family members and influences who have significantly contributed to the client’s spiritual development and journey (Cunningham, 2012 Bullis, 1996). The genogram allows the patient to see hereditary patterns of behavior and medical and psychological factors that run through families. Therapists and clients can complete a spiritual genogram. The word genogram refers to a diagram illustrating a person’s family members, how they are related, and their medical history.
